Brigadier General Kurt W. Stein

Service Representative: Director Marine and Family Programs

Term of Service: 2 Years — Beginning in January 2017

Brigadier General Stein assumed the duties of Director Marine and Family Programs in November, 2016. He is a native of Pennsylvania and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant through the PLC program after graduating from Grove City College.

A Naval Aviator by trade, BGen Stein completed flight school in 1991 and has flown more than 100 combat missions and accumulated more than 4,500 flight hours in numerous platforms. He has deployed in support of Operation Restore Hope (Somalia), Operation Southern Watch and numerous exercises supporting coalition partners. He has also deployed to the CENTCOM AOR for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom I, where his squadron flew more than half of all the fixed-wing assault support missions supporting I Marine Expeditionary Force during the Iraqi invasion.

In 1998, he transferred to the Reserve Component and remained with the squadron, assuming the position of Pilot/Aircrew Training Officer. In 2004, he again mobilized and deployed to AI Asad, Iraq, in the Anbar Province for OIF-II as the Detachment Commander. During this deployment the unit was a key participant in Operation Phantom Fury, the battle of Fallujah.

In 2005, he assumed the duties of executive officer and his squadron was once again mobilized to support humanitarian relief efforts throughout the gulf coast of the United States after Hurricane Katrina.

In 2006, he was selected to attend the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he received a Master’s of Science degree in Strategic Studies. Upon graduation, he reported to the Deputy Commandant I&L, HQMC, to serve in the Vision and Strategy Branch. This experience and follow-on command tours prepared him well for his appointment as the Assistant Deputy Commandant for Aviation which was prior to his current assignment.
